(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Charon is the largest satellite of the dwarf planet Pluto, discovered by U.S. Naval Observatory astronomer James Christy after observing some images of Pluto taken by the Naval Observatory’s Flagstaff Station. Wishing to name the body after his wife Charlene, he proposed Charon as a scientific-sounding name, only to serendipitously discover later that Charon was the Greek name of the ferryman over the river Styx, somewhat mythologically appropriate to Pluto (even though Pluto was a Roman name and Charon Greek). Persephone was also suggested due to Persephone being the wife of Hades/Pluto.
Interestingly, Charon is large enough compared to Pluto that the two bodies are actually gravitationally locked—meaning, the two bodies always show the same face to each other, and Pluto rotates around a point that is outside of itself.

- If next week’s Inside Jeopardy doesn’t have the question posted to Ken about “where Jeopardy is in 20 years”, I will be very disappointed.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
